GMAT for Ph.D.'s

Hello everyone!

I am currently in a situation where I may have to take GMAT to apply for a doctorate program. I am wondering if any of you had direct or indirect experiences of dealing with doctorate admissions.

Many postgraduate programs are not willing to disclose even average GMAT scores of accepted applicants. Also, I can't help wondering what weight is given to GMAT scores if compared with GPA, essays, and letters of recommendation.

I would appreciate every piece of pertinent information and would like to thank all of the respondents in advance.

Max

Hi there Anu & Max, this may not help much, but a close friend of mine was admitted into a b-school doctorate program in 2000, and he had the following to say :

In general the GMAT figure for admitted candidates is in the 740-760 range for admitted candidates. Please note the Ph.D candidates tend to be EXTREMELY strong in the quant areas. Perfect quants are fairly common (probably because those who want to get into doctorate programs already have technical master's degrees), specially for those programs involving a lot of microeconomics and econometric methods.

Adcomms look for the following in every applicant :

- GMAT scores ( or GRE scores in the 90th %ile).
- Academic record (Very good is a minimum requirement)
- A master's degree relevant to the research area you wish to work in. Very few students without master's make it to Ph.D
- Research interests that match what faculty the does (your applications are thoroughly reviewed by faculty, and not just adcomms). Faculty generally welcome questions on their research from potential applicants.
- Academic recommendations more valuable. Professional refs are welcome, if there's a strong research component in your work.
- Why Ph.D is not an issue (like it is for the MBA), but why a particular school is definitely a big issue for all the schools you apply to. It has to be reflected on your essays.

Hope this helps. I honestly don't know much more, except you will have to work hard and get extremely good GMAT/GRE scrores, unless you haven't done so already.... and do try and talk to Ph.D adcomms, and faculty. Ph.Ds in every school is no more than a 100 student program (all years combined)....

Have a nice day.
