You are correct, 32 is above the average age for MBA students in the USA (usually students are around 25-28 years old). Having said that, many students are in their early thirties and it really depends on what you are hoping to get out of the program. If you are planning on returning to the same place of work, then you might consider pursuing an executive MBA and getting your company to sponsor you.
In regards to the comment made by your boss, I actually think this is a false statement. If you can gain admission to a top MBA program in the US, you will have a large number of options available to you upon graduation. The only question is whether or not you have the right background and experiences (education, test scores, volunteer work, hobbies) to gain entrance to a top program.
