The best way to study smart is sometimes to get some buddies in the course to share the work workload and look after each other. This doesn't always work because it can be hard to find good people or their can be personality clashes or free loaders but it is good when it does. A lot of programs have group work anyway so that can help.
Don't worry if you work on your own there is no problem doing that. I think it is better to work on your own than in a bad group that take a lot of your energy anyway.
