What are my chances and which schools to choose given the following ...

I have a undergraduate degree in Mechanical engineering from one of OK school in India. GPA 2.83.

I have been working in the Software Industry for the past 7 years. I have held various managing positions in Mortgage Industry on Technology Aspects. I managed Outsourcing projects from A to Z.

I have range certifications( 20-30) which are very valuable in the software Industry.

Now I have lead another Mortgage Startup company from a Technology aspect. Have successfully managed and sold two companies in India in the past 4-5 years.I can get good reco's from my immediate supervisors as well as the Executive management.

I have participated in various charity events while in school and college.

My GMAT score is 660.

What else I should I be doing to gaurantee myself a place in top 20 schools.

Thanks in advance.

Hi, Hass_ornot,

Thanks for posting to this forum. Let's take a look at your profile:

Your undergrad GPA of 2.83 from a school in India will be below average at top-tier schools, and your 660 GMAT score is a bit below average for students at Haas.

Your seven years of work experience are slightly above average at schools like Haas, but it sounds like you've had a fairly successful track record in managing technology within the mortgage industry. As you continue to think about business school, you may want to brainstorm a bit about your leadership and teamwork experiences throughout your career, as it will be important to provide specific examples of each in your essays.

I'm glad to hear that you were involved in extracurriculars at college, and hopefully you have continued to be involved in activities outside of work throughout your career. It will be important to show adcoms that you would be a dynamic, contributing member of the student body.

Overall, it sounds like you might have some interesting perspectives to offer at business school. From what you have told me about your background, it looks like the academic area of your profile is below average for top-tier schools. In order to strengthen this area, you may want to take a class or two to build an 'alternate transcript,' thus showing adcoms that your academic abilities are actually quite strong. Consider taking one or more classes in accounting, statistics, calculus, or economics, and be sure that you get an A grade.

Feel free to contact me directly if you have other questions about my comments.

Best of luck,

Sarah Scheckter

Thanks for the response.

a. Looks like the GPA hurts me the most. Do you think its a sure shot if I complete my MS with a good GPA this year ( 2005) and apply in 2006 with better credentials? How does the 8 years job expereince reflect then ?

b. I plan to start my own corporation in US now ,as I got my Green card last month. I would be doing Software Consulting, which would complement my desire to open a sucessful corporation. I can even support my education on my own, working parttime for my self.

c. I should take my GMAT once again.. hoping to increase the score.

How do the plans above improve my chances?

Thanks in advance.
