I wanted to apply to a school that was on the east coast, but after the MBA I would like to work in the LA area. Do you think it would be better for me to stay on the westcoast?

Dear Jane,

If your goal is to work in the Los Angeles area after your MBA, then you should at least be looking at some of the southern California schools like UCLA, USC and UC Irvine. Remember, most MBAs tend to wind up settling fairly close to the program they attend. This means that UCLA has a stronger alumni network in LA than they have in NYC. It also means that NYU has a weaker network in LA than they do in NYC.

If you are still set on getting your MBA on the east coast, then be sure to attend the BEST program you can. For example, one could argue that attending Wharton makes sense over USC, UCLA and UC Irvine, even if you are targeting California for employment. I also encourage you to investigate the southern CA alumni clubs at each of the schools on your list. For example, how many people are active in Columbia Business School's Los Angeles alumni group? These are the kinds of resources you may ultimately tap into - so make sure they are sound.

Best of luck,

Graham Richmond
