I was planning to study by myself for GMAT> Tentatively plan to take it in about 2 months...

Any guidelines/timeframes/books anyone can recommend which I should incorporate...

I'd like to aim for a 90% percentile ( wouldn't we all =) )

Thanks!
Anu.

Anu, I'm preparing for the GMAT too, albeit for an MBA.

Since you're applying for a doctoral program, I'm assuming your quant foundations are very strong. The best books available are the below :

- The ETS official guide, contains well over 1400 questions, many of them from actual GMAT tests. Costs about USD 30. You should be able to get it in most major bookstores or off the net.

- The Kaplan books are of a good standard (comes with the CD and 4 practice tests). There's also a book by Kaplan called 800 GMAT. Good stuff for the high octane verbal questions.

- If, and ONLY if you want to start basic, and if you're based in India (guessing from your name), try out the IMS Max GMAT. Starts with all the maths concepts, and goes up to 15 GMAT practice tests, 5 of those on computer.

Also, if you saw a previous post, doctoral candidates in almost every school score monstrously high on the GMAT. A mere 700 may not be enough. Please do work very hard.

Good luck.

Hey Anu,
I am studying for the GMAT and doing it alone like you. I've been using the Kaplan book for Quant. and I feel it doesn't really cover all the topics - assumes you have a decent working knowledge of concepts. Anyway, ARCO has a good book for Reading Comprehension only so if you need help in that section, try it out. Also, if any of you know of a good book for the math section could you let me know? Thanks.
