Hi,
I'm writing to find out if I have a good chance of getting admission into a top 15 business school. The following are my academic work details:
GMAT : 720 (I believe I had a 97% in Math and 89 or 90 in Verbal)
TOEFL : Full Score
Undergrad GPA : We didn't have GPAs, but my percentage score was 84%. Since that was athe top score in the University, it's pretty much a 4.0
Graduate GPA : 3.9 (computer engineering)
I have worked at two software engineering firms for 4 years and 6 months respectively.
I applied to around 8 or 9 schools two years ago (when I had slightly less than 2 years work experience) and got rejected outright by all except Columbia where I was waitlisted for the longest time only to get finally rejected there too.
Although my work expreience is mainly in the engineering side, I have undertaken roles that have involved negotiations and have been in charge of an entire product offering.
I'm not sure where I went wrong the last time I applied but I feel it must be due to my limited work experience at that time and an application that was not upto par.
I am really motivated to give the admissions another shot but I wanted to know what you thought my chances are.
Thanks,
jkam
Clear Admit 08-21-2003, 07:20 PM Dear JKAM,
Thanks for your posting. You have a wonderful academic profile and a solid GMAT score that will be at or above the average at every top MBA program. Your work experience sounds promising - as long as you can focus on the project management and team/leadership elements.
On the surface, it would seem that you should be very competitive at the top schools as a reapplicant, but you will need to have strong applications with clear goals and an understanding of each program's nuances. I am also curious about your extracurricular/community involvement and the sources for your recommendations. You did not mention these areas, but they will be critical factors in the process.
Please feel free to contact us directly if you have any further questions.
Best of luck with your MBA applications,
Graham Richmond
Hi Graham,
thanks for your reply. I'm relieved to hear that you think I may have a chance and must say that it's definitely a morale boost.
In any case, as far as extra-curricular activities go, the following are the things I participate in regularly
a) Volunteer at the local food bank
b) Member of my church choir
c) Mentor to a group of high school students
d) Fundraising for a charity group that sponsers child education.
There are other little activities too, but these are the main ones.
This time around, I have requested recommendations from
a) The VP of engineering at my former company.
b) My current manager
c) My manager at my former company
My colleagues and several project leaders under whom I have worked are also ready to write recommendations.
Do let me know what your comments are. Do you think I should strive to involve myself in further extra-curricular activities?
Very determined but anxious,
Jkam
