fshy5000 07-10-2003, 03:26 PM I've noticed a few MBA applications seem to place emphasis on getting a reference from your *current* supervisor.
Wondering how significant this is - I'd prefer not to have to discuss the admissions process with my current supervisor at this time, and don't think he would be my best advocate among my potential choices.
On a second note, wondering how a European one-year MBA program is viewed by U.S. employers in general.
Clear Admit 07-23-2003, 09:08 AM Dear Fshy5000,
Thanks for your questions. See my responses below:
1) Recommendation from current supervisor.
Ideally you should submit a letter from your current supervisor, since they should be the most 'up to date' on your ability levels, project experiences, etc. Having said that, many MBA applicants find themselves in a situation where they would rather not tell their current supervisor (for fear of changing their working relationship, losing their job, etc.). In this case it is perfectly acceptable to choose a former supervisor.
The key is to just make sure that whoever writes on your behalf is willing to take the time to draft a detailed letter with plenty of anecdotes - rather than just 'blank praise'.
2) 1-year European MBA programs.
Most of the MBA programs in Europe have limited brand recognition - even in business circles - in the United States. The exceptions are INSEAD and ocassionally IMD, Cambridge and Oxford (the latter two mostly b/c of their overall brand name). London Business School's program (2 years) is probably the best known European MBA (but it doesn't meet your 1-yr criteria). While many former MBAs have heard of places like Manchester, Cranfield, IESE, Rotterdam, Bocconi, etc., they are generally thought to rank somewhere outside of the top 15-20 US MBA programs.
If your goal is to permanently live and work in the US, you typically
would be better off pursuing your MBA in the USA. Oddly enough, a VERY high percentage of MBAs tend to settle within a 5 hour drive of the program they attend - even in this 'global MBA' environment.
Best of luck with your applications. Please contact us at info@clearadmit.com if you would like to speak further about your candidacy. We offer a free initial phone consult.
