What are my chances please?

Hi. I just wondered what my chances of getting into a top ten
school are. I really like Stanford and Harvard.

1) I have an undergrad in CS from a State School, ranked 70 by Princeton Review. My GPA is 3.1 with CS. My CS GPA is a 3.5. I didn't do as well in the liberal Arts courses.

2) I have almost finished a Masters at a private school ranked 84 by Princeton Review with a 3.9 GPA in Software Engineering. I re-dedicated myself and wanted to prove to myself I can easily do the work.

3) My GMATs are in the mid 600's. I have traditionally not been a great test taker.

4) I have worked at a large company for almost 4 years. I have presented at the company's largest engineering conference twice. I am also considered somewhat of a company expert in certain technologies. I get asked to help mentor and teach many other employees. I am the youngest employee in company history to present in this fashion.

Thanks a lot in advance.

Dear Tglippa,

Thanks for your posting. Although I do not have a complete picture of your candidacy (outside activities, career goals, etc.). I do have some concerns regarding your chances at a top 10 program:

1) Your undergraduate GPA is on the low side - particularly since your school is not very highly ranked.

2) Your GMAT in the mid 600's is about 50 points below the average at the top schools.

3) Your work experience and education sounds very technical in nature and you will have to battle the 'techie' sterotype when you apply.

On the plus side, your GGPA is wonderful and it does appear that you have had some great leadership experiences as work.

In conclusion, unless you have some truly outstanding activites or other unique elements in your profile, I would not focus too strongly on HBS and Stanford. Both of these programs have 710+ GMAT averages, 3.5+ GPAs and are filled with students who have a variety of interests, accomplishments and skills (students who do well in both liberal arts type courses and technical subjects). Please let me know if you have any other questions or wish to speak via phone.

Best of luck,

Graham Richmond

Thanks for your input. If I can get my GMAT score up will that help my chances at the schools I want to attend? Does my Masters degree at a good school with a good GPA offset my undergraduate GPA? I worked full time while I went to school undergrad and also ran my own company. I do have my heart set on a top 10 school and I do have a lot of leadership experience at work that I did not list.

I would definitely like to talk on the phone about my chances. Do you offer a free initial consultation?

Thanks a lot for your input.
