Hi Clear Admit,
I am currently a senior undergrad attending a Maryland state school majoring in Business. My goal is to attend the University of Maryland (Smith) for their MBA program. The program was ranked 38th this year by Financial Times (http://rankings.ft.com/rankings/mba/rankings.html). I am thinking about the part time program and also after I get some real work experience outside of my internships. What advice do you have for me to get into this program (GMAT scores, etc.)? How difficult will it be to get in (part time)? How much work experience should I have before applying?
I know I sound premature with all of this but I really want to get into this program.
Thanks for your help!

Clear Admit 04-17-2006, 07:12 PM Dear Nicholas,
It’s great to see that you trying to learn about your MBA options while still doing your undergrad work. As you decide how best to gain admission into the Maryland program, be it full-time or part-time, you will need to figure out the relationship between the strength of your candidacy and how soon you want to enroll. If you get a few years of full-time work experience, that will likely strengthen your candidacy. However, if, based on your career goals, you feel that enrolling in an MBA program sooner is in your best interest, that may also be a possibility.
Specifically with regard to the Maryland program, there are a couple of things to keep in mind:
1) The scientific focus: As I assume you already know, the full-time and part-time programs at Maryland combine an MBA and an MS. Therefore, your experience in science and math classes during undergrad will be very important for admission. In particular, for example, you will be required to take calculus, and earn at least a B, before enrolling in the program. If you also have other strong marks in quantitatively focused courses to your credit, your candidacy will only be strengthened. If need be, you can feel free to take the calculus course after graduating from undergrad (even after applying to Smith, if need be).
2) GMAT: The program’s average GMAT in the past few years has been around 650, with the middle 80% of applicants scoring between 560-720. Therefore, you will need to earn at least a 560 to have a legitimate chance of admission.
Good luck with the application process!
