Chances for admissions - low gmats

Hi,

I just retook my GMATs for the second time and received a dismal score of 590. This was 40 points lower than my first attempt (scored 630).

My target school is part time NYU which has a middle 80% of GMAT scores between 620-700+. Effectively, my second score has dropped me from being competitive.

The two programs I would like to apply for are part-time NYU and EMBA Columbia. Based on what I have read on the web, they indicate that only the highest GMAT score will be considered.

I guess my question is whether my second GMAT attempt will negatively impact admissions. Wont the ADCOM see both scores (since I sent both scores each time I took the exam) and assume my first score, which is already rather low, a fluke?

As for the GMATs, I have some time to retake it again since I am applying for Fall 2006, but before I do, I would like to know if I should focus my efforts on the rest of application rather than the GMATs.

Thanks for your help.

Dear Shammy,

Even though they will see both scores, the adcom most likely won’t interpret your higher score as a fluke, but might consider your true score to be between the two. That being said, if you think that you could raise your score above a 650, it would be a good idea to retake the GMAT. You haven’t listed what the breakdown of your scores is but if these are both significantly below 80%, I’d recommend that you take it another time. As you’ve pointed out, you still have some time before your application. Make sure that you take the time to fully prepare yourself for the exam and consider taking a course, if you haven’t already done this. Good luck!

Sincerely,

Chelsea Ferrell
