Jason Howard 07-14-2006, 11:08 PM I don't know too much about the CareerStart program at AGSM but have read the web page and it looks like a good program to fast track your way to an MBA while still gaining important work experience (essential to getting the most out of an MBA). I'll contact the school and post again.
I do know that the AGSM is a top teir school in Australia and Asia. I know alot of people who have done an MBA there and not regretted it. The main difference between an MBA at AGSM and somewhere like Macquarie, which is also a good school in Australia, is that the AGSM is probably more theoretical. Though the CareerStart program looks like a good way of balancing this with practical experience.

Jason Howard 08-03-2006, 12:57 AM I spoke with the AGSM today. The CareerStart program is an innovative new program which starts in 2007.
It's been set up as a 'career accelerator', enabling the best and brightest students to start an MBA without needing the required work experience. It combines a work placement with a sponsoring company and study which means the program takes 2.5 years to complete rather than 15-18 months for the traditional MBA program.
The program is part funded by the sponsoring company and the AGSM which equates to about a 50% scholarship so you will still need to find about AUD25,000 for the program over the 2.5 years though during the work placements you will be earning a salary.
Potential candidates need to use the standard MBA application but indicate in their essays that they are interested in the careerstart program. There will only be about 5-10 places in 2007 so competition is high. Given the purpose of the program to select the best and brightest you will also need a GMAT of 700+ and demonstrate leadership potential, team based skills, community contribution etc in your application.
The deadline for applications for the Jan 2007 start date is 30 September and international students should apply early because you'll need to get a sponsored visa with the sponsoring company.
There is an information session next Thursday, 10 Aug, in Sydney. If you are interested in attending then contact Lara Brauer on +61 2 9931 9493 or visit the web site http://www2.agsm.edu.au/agsm/web.nsf/Content/FutureStudents-CareerStart
It sounds like a very useful program for those lucky enough to be selected. You get to start an MBA earlier in your career but with the support and encouragement of a company sponsor.
