Hi ,
I'm looking for advise on Schools to apply and evaluation of my chances of getting in. I'm an Indian, graduated in 2001(IIT - Cpi 8.3/10) worked for a year with Indian s/w major for a year and then resigned to join my family business(We have a diverse one- Movie Theatre, Guest House, Banquet Halls all running for past 20 years). From my college days i had a dream to have my own college! give the best of possible education and give back what ever little knowledge i have gained in these years. Well,It took me a year to understand where we stand and how the businesses work. As the businesses were well established, i got to know lots of details of a running business, but felt a need to get to the basics of how a business is established, managed and run! I started my own co.,(a franchise of Reliance Infocom(a mobile co., in india)) started with a team of 8 members and within a year we were no. 2 in terms of sales! got to learn a lot! in 2004 i got the opportunity to start my own college and eventually did! my marketing skills and college results(my students topped the Univ in all the courses MCA,BCA & MBA) helped in bringing fame and laurel in the 1st sem it self!!
I now feel a need for an MBA, there were occasions (for ex., i had demands for franchises, but was reluctant in pursuing with it as i felt i would not be able to properly manage coll + franchises at the same time) when i felt a need to enhance my management skills to manage business on a much larger scale!

It would be great if you could evaluate my profile and let me know my chances of getting into Top B schools(Top -10)

btw, i took Gmat and scored 700(Q51,V32) {v-67percentile} ,would you suggest me to re-take GMAT?

Thanks,
Saranjit
(sorry for the long post, but I'm concerned about how the schools would percieve my profile!)

the verbal is on the low side, so if you think you can improve that, and you have time, I would do so. You do not mention community service work / XCs from college. If they are strong, I think you should apply in round one to a few of the top 10 schools for sure (Wharton etc). It seems you have some decent leadership etc. I did not read anything in your profile that suggested you were not top school material.

sure, I saw that. as i said, you look well qualified for the best, the verbal part of the GMAT seems to be the one thing that may let you down.

when i advise people, i always focus on the weakest part of their application, that is the most important part of the application. the awa is perhaps the least looked at data point.

cheers, alex

Thanks Alex !
How can I compensate low verbal score? Is re-taking GMAT the only solution or are there other alternatives? Time factor becomes a consideration at this moment, as im targeting the 1st deadline.
Btw, how much diff does it make in applying in 2nd round in comparison to applying in 1st round?
Regards,
Saranjit

you really need to apply in round 1, and possibly have a better verbal score on the GMAT. if you can do both you will be in much better shape. cheers, alex
