chickenz 08-29-2006, 12:42 PM Hi,
I'm a 28 year old male/Asian.
I attended University of Florida I was going to apply for Business schools for Fall 2007 admissions. If you read my semi-profile below I didn't go exactly the "typical" route of a business school candidate or a business executive. I don't have time from now until deadlines to make a "alternate" transcript, but i would like to catch up on my basic business skills like accounting and econ. I would like to focus on Marketing at the Corporate level since I’ve been in that field for some time now.
- GMAT: studying for it right now, will be taking the test this Oct.
I plan on scoring at least 700 ::crossing fingers::
- Undergrad: BA in Business Administration at University of Florida.
My GPA was less than stellar, about a 2.3 ( i was young, not focused, was unsure of my goals) I've been out of school since year 2000
- Work experience: I think my work exp is somewhat unique to other applicants. I didn't do the "corporate" route, but instead tried working on my own route. I did 3 years exp doing local marketing projects for small company doing advertising.
Worked in computer sales for 1 year. 4 years ago I started my own Screen printing and merchandising business in my town focusing on merchandising and licensing for national bands landing deals with U.S. mall chains such as Hot Topic Inc. (that store in the mall with the angry goth teenage kids wearing all black) and the extreme music and sports festival, Vans Warped Tour (you know the shoes. VANS). I traveled extensively every summer on the Vans Warped Tour hitting about 50 cities in 2 months..setting up a merchandise booth and exposing my business to about 9000 people per day.
When I’m home during the rest of the year, in addition to my business, I work part time on the university campus as a lab assistant in a pesticide research lab. (for extra income essentially)
- Extra curricular activities:
a) Provided free t shirts to Girl's and Boy's Club basketball, softball teams
b) Sponsored a Domestic Abuse-Free Women's Events
- Reco letters: My lab job has 3 directors/professors that can write me great rec letters.
I am applying to:
1) Duke (Fuqua)
2) Dartmouth (Tuck)
3) Georgetown
4) UF (Warrington)
5) Emory University (Goizueta)
6) Yale
So what do I need to do…I’m very out of the loop as far as a typical executive goes, but I wouldn’t mind trying my best to fit in at a business school and do well.
thanks

ImJustMatt 08-31-2006, 02:02 AM I would go ahead and register for classes ASAP. you can include anticipated classes somewhere on the application (most have space designated). A good GMAT will help, but i think you're really going to need a come to Jesus story to get over a 2.3 for top 10 schools.
You might still be able to get into classes this semester, either full semester or for the mini-terms and apply round 2 (most deadlines in Jan). For what its worth, I'm also an applicant - I don't have any special experience that gives me the authority to judge - but a 2.3 is outside of the middle 80% and would seem to need something equally impressive to offset.

If you have some additional information, we may be able to assist you better. Why do you want an MBA? How are your GMAT and TOEFL?

thanks for the advice,
fall semester is already full, but i am going to try for spring..my application will already be sent in by Round 2 (jan) ...but maybe I can indicate on my application that I am planning on taking some refresher courses for the spring before entering their school.
which courses do you think would be good? i plan on taking Financial Accounting, Business Stats and maybe Economics to get myself up to speed when I do step foot in the b-school classroom
i'm majoring in Marketing.
thanks
alex
ImJustMatt 08-31-2006, 11:18 PM Sounds ok, but I would still recommend you to take at least a mini-semester class that finishes before your application date, even if it is through a community college. You need to give them some sign that you have turned the corner, not just thinking wishfully.
If you are employed concurrently, you may consider cutting back at least one of those classes - this is clearly a case where grade supercedes learning - you are trying to prove that you can handle the coursework. Take the hardest class that you can get an A in; a B would be considered (in my mind) as a disaster. You want to really come out firing.

Clear Admit 09-02-2006, 06:54 PM I would say you need at least three classes, and get As in each. You really need to demonstrate academic aptitude AND motivation. If you cannot complete the classes before you apply then make sure you make it clear in the optional essays your plans ... b ut I would really try to find classes now (as mentioned community college stuff will serve the purpose most likely) cheers, alex
ImJustMatt 09-03-2006, 11:36 AM I defer to the more experienced advice.
