Profile feedback and Advice on management in consulting

HI Guys,

I was Googling to find good info on career in management consulting when I came across this website. I am amazed to see the quality of reply in the forum by everyone and especially “Clear Admit? I read lot of posts and they were really helpful. Thanks.

I have some question of my own. I am Software Engineer from India(No points for guessing) with 3+ years of work exp. I am aspiring for MBA in Consulting in 2007 fall from a top 15 college in US/INSEAD. I want to get feedback related to my profile and preferable colleges.

My Profile
-- BE (Computer Science) from Delhi College of Engineering, Delhi University. College ranked among top 10 in India. 77% (don’t know equivalent GPA). Ranked 5th in class.

-- GMAT ?770, Quant - 95%, Verbal - 97%, AWA - 4.5

-- Work Exp ?3+ years of total Work Experience. Worked for 1+ year in Microsoft India. Working since 2+ years in Texas Instruments India. Current designation ?Senior Software Engineer. Have performed fairly well in my career, and got quick promotions. Also have some patents/awards with me.

-- Extra Curricular ?I think this is my weakest area. I don’t have many extra curricular activities for which I have got formal recognitions but still I am involved in doing things other than work. I play lot of sports, do trekking, have learnt and play guitar. I have earned few awards in sports at Microsoft and TI. Regarding Community Serivces, I have been involved in an initiative to do waste management in our office. I worked with an NGO to implement this in our office. This was not a big effort though and this is only thing I have for community service.

-- Leadership ?I haven’t been formally managing people, but I have been involved in driving some releases of our product. Coordinated with team in India and US for this. Also, I am looked up to in my team for Conflict Management and Crisis management. These things should also be there in my referrals.

Other ?I am learning French language.

I am working in a group (DLP) at TI which is in the market (TV/projectors) where there is lot of competition. It is really exciting to see the business strategies made to excel in business and this has really motivated me to do an MBA in strategic management and business consulting.

I want to know if my profile is good enough to get admission in a top school and what are the schools best suited for my career aspiration and my profile. Also would like to know about schools where I can get good aid or which are relatively less expansive.

Thanks for your time and efforts.

on stats alone, you look more like a top 5 candidate than a top 15. based on the profile you gave, I think you have a shot at any university, given great execution. Have you checked in with the Business Week Forums? Those forums have a few admissions consultants who can give you a range of advice on executing your essays. Clear Admit is there, also...but they check it more frequently.

Best of luck, I think you'll do great!

while I agree with Matt from a numbers standpoint, I think you might be hampered by less than stellar community service, and while your work experience is decent it does not seem to standout. If you do not go to school next year then get some leadership within community service, then you will be a strong candidate for the best schools. For now, its possible, but I would think the very top (top 3 HSW) it might be too much of a reach. cheers, alex

Again, I defer to the more experienced advice.
