What are my chances at rutgers?

I have 10 years of IT work experience. I also have an masters degree from india. I took the gmat recently and got an 650 total score. verbal is at 90%(40) and quantitative is at 58%(39). There is a big discrepancy in the quant and verbal scores although I am a math major from my undergraduate degree. What are the chances of my getting admission at RBS?

Dear RBS Hopeful,

While your GMAT is actually a bit above the average overall score, your noticeably lower quantitative percentile will potentially raise concern amongst the admissions committee. The fact that you majored in mathematics and have done a great deal of work in the IT field could help you begin to quell these concerns. If you performed strongly during undergrad and while pursuing your Masters, that will also help. However, the GMAT is the only part of the application where the adcom gets a standardized look at your individual quantitative abilities ?abilities that are so important to success in the business school environment. Therefore, I think that you should study, consider enrolling in a GMAT preparatory course, and then try to raise your score on a retake of the test. Rather than using your academic record to try to excuse your low GMAT quant., try to move into the application process with strong results on both fronts.

Another thing to keep in mind is that Rutgers students are typically fairly young (the average age of students in the program is around 26). Therefore, if you are significantly older, which I assume you are based on your professional experience, you will need to be able to explain why you have waited until now to pursue your degree. However, provided that you prepare the remainder of your candidacy as strongly as possible, I don’t think that this will be a major issue.

Good luck with the application process!

Thank you for the feedback. Fortunately, I have been accepted at rutgers. BTW, i applied to the part time MBA program, so I hope to have people in the class in my age group, lower 30s. I feel that my strong math and technical background did help me.
