Very Unusual Applicant

I've been viewing this site for a while now and decided I had to post as I believe I have one of the more unique backgrounds (and I cant seem to figure out if its a pro or a con).

I applied to Fordham and NYU Stern and got into Forham but deferred admission and am still waiting to hear from Stern. I am an environmental insurance lawyer at AIG litigating and settling cases into the dozens of millions of dollars. I've been working for two years and am admitted to practice law in multiple states.

I went to Union College and Case Western School of Law. I had low GPAs (2.9s) but excellent extra-circulars including being an All-American Swimmer in college and publishing a peer reviewed article in the Stanford University Law Journal.

My GMAT is incredibly skewed- 39th percentile in quant and 98th in verbal, coming to a 620. I make no qualms about being bad at math, especially on standardized tests, but I can repair, build and understand almost anything technical. In college I could boggle the engineers. But alas, the math. In my essays I talk a lot about bridging the communications gap between engineers, lawyers and business people.

I do other interesting things including triathlons, marathons, and travel around the world to kayak, backcountry ski, bike, etc. I also am a vegetarian, environmentalist, woodworker and wine maker. I spin all these experiences into a great story about how I want to get into alternative energy venture capital or entrapaneurship.

I’m wondering if someone can comment on my chances at NYU. Does the uniqueness of my background, including being a lawyer, make up for relatively low GPA and a skewed GMAT or am I dead in the water?

THANKS!

Schools want to be assured you will not struggle with the analytical aspects of their programs. They will look at your transcripts and GMAT to determine this, and especially analytical coursework and the quant-side of the GMAT. I would suspect the quant-side of your GMAT would make it tough for a school like Stern. Taking a class or two now and getting As may be one way of trying to resolve this issue.

You will find that it really does not matter how interesting an application (applicant) is if there are fundamental issues within the application (i.e. one aspect of an application does not make up for the other necessarily).

Thanks for your candor. I knew the quant made it a long shot. But they've had the app for months now, so at least i'm not an automatic-deny.

In addition to taking a quant class, i'm going to retake the GMAT and prepare more thoroughly. (If i get rejected that is) Thanks for your comments.

Have you considered taking some type of GMAT course? I think if you could add a few tools to your quick-trick tool box, you could get over the math hurdle and the let the rest of your application carry you.

the math section of the GMAT is still fundamentally an exercise in reading questions and reading answers - as long as you have a suitable set of tools to bridge the two.

Into the 8th week and still havent heard from NYU. Starting to get ancy! Presumably they're not sure about me so they're waiting on other admits to declare? But i'm not quite a wait list or deny? What else could be the cause of the delay?

I am guessing your assessment for the reason for the delay is spot on. cheers, alex

Can someone give me their thoughts on where they think I stand with Stern's Part-time program?.... I am a White/Male/26 .........My GMAT is a 690 (V 91%, Q 74%), undergraduate GPA of 2.3 in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Lafayette College (Played Division I NCAA basketball, it was the reason for my low GPA, which I expressed in my optional essay)....I have a Masters in Computer Engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology with a 3.6 GPA. I have been working for the U.S. Department of Defense as a Computer Engineer since graduation (which was 3 years ago)...It's now July 17th (almost 10 weeks) and I have heard nothing...any thoughts???
