Career path to MBA

Hi David,

I won't need to avail myself of the services of your organisation for a few years yet but I'd appreciate your perspective on my path towards an MBA.

I'm 80-90% sure that I'd like to pursue an MBA at a top European university (eg INSEAD, IMD) in a few years time but here is my present story.

I recently graduated with a B Computer Science from a good university in Sydney, Australia and I've been offered positions in the graduate programmes of two of the country's largest corporations.

One offer is the IT division of a retail bank and the other is the network services division of a telco.

My questions are as follows:

* How important is your industry background (ie telecommunications or financial services) when applying for MBA admission?

* In the event that I choose to no longer follow the MBA career path then I'd be happiest in a highly technical role at the telco. How important then are the following factors in MBA applications:
-project management exp
-management exp
-business/systems analyst and especially consultancy exp
-financial exp?
Much of this experience I'd be less likely to obtain in a highly technical role.

Thanks in advance,

Lang

Hi Lang and thanks for your inquiry.

It would be wrong to say there is only one career path you can take to gain admission to b-school. My advice is to follow your heart. If you like the highly-technical career path, then go that way. Perhaps if you still want an MBA, you will be able to spin a story about needing the MBA to do something that is very technically-oriented.

Best of luck with your applications!

Sincerely,
