bryanz 07-23-2006, 06:09 AM Dear all,
I would like to ask for your advice on my selection of schools and the chance of admission.
I am applying for MBA class of 2009. Some of my information are as follows.
? Just turned 30 in mid this year...
? With Electronic Engineering academics background (no GPA in our system, but got the top grades - 1st Hon and Distinction respectively in the Bachelor and Master degrees)
? An software engineer working on a smartcard-payment system in railway of Hong Kong
? Working for 8 years in the same company since graduation: (seems plain, but I do have some variety which keeps me in every 2 or 3 years)
First 2 as a trainee, understood different major functions in the company;
Another 3 years on development / enhancement of different equipment in the system, and got the chartered engineer status; (hands-on experiences will help me a lot when at management level!)
Another 2 years in an european project where I led a small group to develop an equipment as part of the upgrade in that country's transport system (really saw a lot of cultural differences in the project working with foreign contractors / clients)? Drive towards getting a MBA
I did get a small consultant task after my first 3 years to advise our peer in another Asia country, who has an equipment from the same vendor with ours. Got a first taste then consultant job may be a good path for me in future, but then was thinking about getting the chartered engineer status first.
Since finishing the european project, I knew that I need probably a MBA degree to let me get to the right and fast track towards a more leading role in the company or consultancy industry - I have thoughts on how our pioneering system can turn into actual profits for our company, but given my current status and role it will be impossible to do so then and even in near future.
Only one major but focused extra-curricular experiences - 7-year experiences in a young group in an engineering professional association, the group where I am the chairman now. I believe I have the leader's potential and passion.
As a HK Chinese, I am flexible and hard-working - and I think we can act as a good role to help our mainland peer package well their products, whereas at the same time as a good link for foreign people to purchase cheap and yet quality service from our land.
I want to take a MBA where I grasp in-depth knowledge in business operations and international management. After graduation, I will go to the Consultancy firms for strategic / operations.I will likely apply for Tuck, Fuqua and Ross for their focus on team work and general management. Just thinking of whether I should include another 'safe school'...
Any advices on my chances for the above schools; as well as any recommendation on a ‘safe school?
Thanks,
Bryan
Simon at Rochester is (much to the chagrin of Simon admin) considerred a first tier 'safe' school
slayterdown 08-07-2006, 01:52 PM Be a little weary when choosing 'safe' schools. Make sure you don't compromise quality of schools just because you want to get an MBA. With all your extensive work experience you certainly want to make sure that you get in the best school for you, not any school. A good safe school for someone with your background: Cornell (Johnson).
