priscilla 07-20-2006, 04:07 AM I a BSc. Computer Science graduate and have been working several years as an IT professional. However I do not have much management experience. Will I be able to qualify for MBA program?
I am making a job change currently. Would a sales, consumer relationship job stand a higher chance? Or would a sole background in IT development less management experience be alright?
Please suggest.
Icemastr 07-20-2006, 01:56 PM I think it depends a bit on what you want to do after the MBA. If you want to work in technology as a manager after getting an MBA you should stick to what you are doing. If you want to work in another profession after getting an MBA taking a job doing something else that you want to do after obtaining an MBA where you can gain management experience would be beneficial to you. You might not have had a management position but you might have leadership experience and group project experience with your current company. A lot of tech professionals use MBAs to move into management instead of just an engineering role. Demonstrating your motivation, leadership ability, and accomplishments could prove more valuable in the admissions process than having worked a couple years in a slightly higher position. Otherwise if you haven't done much you will have nothing to seperate you apart from all the other applicants.
slayterdown 07-24-2006, 08:49 PM Instead of worrying about how much managment experience you have, you should focus on 1. why you want your mba, 2. what makes you unique, and 3. what skills you have (not necessarily management skills) that you can apply to your future dream career after you graduate from business school. If you already had extensive management experience, then why bother going to business school... you're wasting your time.
Create a good story and sell it to the business schools you are applying to.
