udhillon 04-27-2006, 08:33 AM Hi,
I did a four year engineering degree (majoring in software engineering) at the University Of New South Wales with a low average (65%) as i really was not sure about what i wanted to do. I then did a Master in Commerce (majoring in finance) at the University of Sydney and managed to get a very high average (83%) and was invited to become a member of Beta Gamma Sigma.
Both Universities are in the top 5 of Australia.
The grading system in Australia is as follows:
50-64 Pass
65 -74 Credit
75 - 84 Distinction
85+ High Distinction
To achieve a first class honours degree, you would need to get above 75%
So i am not sure about the converting my marks to the 4 point GPA.
Now i know i did not do too well for my undergraduate, but i want to try to mitigate the bad marks.
I am aiming to get 700+ for my GMAT and i am currently taking the CFA examinations.
I also work for a major investment bank in Malaysia and I am part of Roteract, Toastmasters and I am also involved in many charitable work.
I would love to know my chances of getting into a top tier MBA school either in the US or UK, assuming i achieved my goals regarding GMAT (I.e. getting 720) plus anything else i could do to stand out.
Icemastr 05-04-2006, 01:09 PM If your grading system is on a scale of 100% you would have a 1.0 and a 3.0 average, either way thats much less than the average of 3.5 for even tier 2 schools. You didn't say much about your work experience, top US schools care a lot about work experience. The master in commerce also might make you look like your not so serious about an MBA I would have to say from what you have stated overall your profile seems below average at best meaning you would need some serious wow factor to even consider a top 10 school in the US. I think you should look at a tier 3 school or a good business program in Australia.
udhillon 05-04-2006, 09:41 PM I dont know what it is like in the states
but how can a First class degree be considered a GPA of 3.0, i think the percentages scales are lil high in the US, a 75+ score in Australia is good,
its very hard to get 85% plus which must equal your A-A+
Anyway according to GPA conversion formula's set at the University of Melbournes website i think my undergrad GPA is 3.1 and the masters is 3.6
So anyway for da masters i was in da top 15% of the class...
undergrad i dont know
i have a 2 years work experience.. and i have an attention disorder (ADD)
would that have a negative impact on my chances?
slayterdown 05-08-2006, 09:05 PM Perhaps you could use your ADD to your advantage. If you can spin it with a story on how your persevered to get past ADD to acheive something special. Maybe you are part of some ADD group or association, helping others who have your condition...
