SoCalMike 09-08-2006, 01:27 AM I graduated with a 3.17 GPA in Biochemistry with a minor in Econ at UCSD. My senior year GPA was a 3.7 but the rest of years where inconsistent with grades depending on how much I liked the class or what time it was (ie 8am-10am classes I never went too at all) Being a non pre med student in a top biological science university where 90% of my major was competitive, unsocial pre meds my grades where just average. In econ my grades faired better where I got a A in econometric but a C+ in lower division financial accounting due to missing most beginning of class quizes (8am start time). This also happened in biology where I got a C in genetics (never went to class) but got an A in molecular biology since I enjoyed it. Since I came in as an engineering major, I got B's in Calculus since I never did any of the HW but got A's in all my physics classes. So bility isn't the issue its my consistency. Is my GPA an issue for top business schools like Kellog, Wharton, Stanford?
Second, since Kellog is my top school because of its biotech circulumn in its mba program and thats the industry I want to work in (after a stint in consulting), is it better to work for a midsize company or a bigger one like a Genentech?
Icemastr 09-08-2006, 02:09 PM Yes your GPA will hurt you since the average GPAs at the top schools are higher than 3.17, however a GMAT score well above 700+ will demonstrate you have the ability to succeed in an MBA program. If you are talking about work experience before getting your MBA you should work for whatever company you feel will givwe you the best opportunity for growth and to demonstrate leadership and meets your longterm goals. Where you work isn't as important as what you did there. You will need to be above average in other categories to make up for your below average GPA.
