thegame421 09-19-2006, 12:11 PM I graduated from a 'top 15' liberal arts college in 2002 with a BA in Economics and a minor in French. GPA was 3.47 overall, steadily improving from a 3.1 during my freshman year to a 3.9 during my senior year. GMAT is 730 (48/42).
Will have had 5 years' work experience by next September, which is when I would like to begin my MBA studies. Last two years spent as Product Manager with a software/proserv firm.
Extracurricular during college was decent (3 years' varsity sport, 1 year club sport plus a semester of volunteer work at SPCA.) Extracurricular since college has been less than stellar (regular participation in fundraising basketball tournaments, 2 years' volunteering with a parish outreach program. I bring zero cultural diversity to the table.
I plan on applying to HBS and Tuck in the November round but feel that I must further diversify in order to ensure that I begin my MBA coursework on time.
2 Questions:
1) Do I have a realistic chance at admission to either of my top two choices?
2) Would you advocate applying to "safety" schools during the same or later application rounds?
Thank you and best regards.
Icemastr 09-19-2006, 02:20 PM In the GPA, GMAT, and work experience from what you have posted you would merely appear average. Do you have a chance of being admitted? Probably. Should you expect to be admitted? No. If you really want to attend school next year and not wait another year I would recommend applying for first round admissions then if you receive a negative decision you would still have time to apply to other schools. I would recommend applying to at least 1 or 2 top 20-30 schools that interest you. You will definitely need to have some accomplishments that demonstrate your leadership ability. In addition a great admissions essay and recommendations will also be necessary if you plan to get into either of those schools.
