Hi there,

I am quite new to the forums, so I hope that I am posting to the correct place.

I am planning to apply for the MBA starting at September 2007. I am not so sure about my possibilities. These are some of my qualifications.

- GMAT : 710
- GPA : 2.80/4.00 (Electrical and Electronics Engineering)
- 4 years of working experience in telecommunications industry but hard to describe it as a managerial position.

I want to have my MBA degree with MIS/IS concentration. So, the schools that rank in top of my list are MIT, Stanford, Wharton and Stern. Moreover on this concentration Carnegie Mellon and Texas Austine ranks high. Another option for me is Boston University MBA or MS-MBA. However I am not sure about the BU's reputation. I really would like to hear any information about these subjects.

Thanks in advance.

Regards
Onur

Aim for the sky!!!!! But then be a little realistic and aim for some trees and bushes as well . . . if my metaphors are lost on you (since they suck), then what I mean is apply to your Harvards, Whartons, etc. and apply to other lower ranked school (that are at least strong in what you want to concentrate in).

Again, its hard to guage how strong an applicant you are at the very top schools . . . You have the GMAT score but do you have something else than can differentiate you from other applicants?? Since we don't know the answer to this, its hard to tell. I do think that your GMAT will make up somewhat for your GPA (which is low for those schools . . . . but understandably low since you were an E.E.).

I think school-wise, your strategy is good . . . apply to to BU and a couple other programs were you have a more solid chance . . . I'm not saying you can't get in to the top ones but its definitely going to be an uphill battle . . . unless ofcourse you again have that elusive "wow" factor that everyone seems to clamor about . . .

So I think you are doing a decent job of building a list of schools and using the proper criteria.

But . . . . tell me something Onur . . . . are you just a "regular, old, seen one you've seen em' all Onur" . . . . or are you a . . . . . "Holy Crap, tell your grandkids you met me, Wow Onur" ????

- The answer to this will probably determine if you get into the Harvards of the world.

Your GMAT is great but your GPA is a little low. You may need a little more wow to get into a top rated school. I agree that there is no harm in applying to top schools. Applications are cheap in comparison to the price of tuition. Graduating from a top rated institution will most likely also help you aquire a higher paying job earlier in your career.

Just make sure to have some more modest choices to fall back on. Make sure they are schools you like, and that they offer what you want to get out of them.
